It began with an e-mail. The inspiration for the poem that would ultimately become the short film and graphic novel Cadaver stemmed from the following frantic late night email sent to writer/director Jonah D Ansell from his sister sister Leah, Medical Student at Northwestern University.
I need to write a short essay/poem/reflection on dissecting a cadaver. We can take it anywhere …like describe what we think the person’s life was like/what it was like for us to open it up. Any ideas on how to make this somewhat interesting? You’ve got the creative genius.
This creative assignment, given to the first-year anatomy class was designed to help the students humanize the dead body they were about to spend the next semester cutting open, and taking in and out of a freezer.
